Most eye exams consist of a vision component, or refraction, and an ocular health evaluation. During the refraction, the doctor will measure how well you can see, and then determine if any optical correction would assist you in seeing better.
The ocular health component consists of an examination in and around the eyes to identify any current or emerging pathology. For a thorough evaluation of ocular health, dilation is needed to be able to fully examine the interior of the eye. Dilation is recommended annually for anyone with a history of ocular pathology being monitored, or at high risk for developing any ocular health issue. For patients who see well and have no history or ocular symptoms, it is wise preventative medicine to still have an eye exam with dilation about every 2-3 years to monitor for anything inside the eye that might progress to cause problems if left unidentified and untreated.

The American Optometric Association recommends that children should have their first eye exam at about 6 months.
If the first exam shows that their eyes are healthy, they should have their next exam when they are 2-3 years old.
Even if eye problems do not run in the family and your child hasn’t displayed any symptoms, they should visit the optometrist every year after the age of 3 to ensure their eyes are in good health.
While many schools offer annual vision checks, it is important to recognize that they are not complete vision exams, and can easily miss important vision and eye health problems. Early detection is very important to make it easier to treat any condition, but is particularly important in children, whose visual systems are still developing and can be seriously and permanently affected by undiagnosed vision problems. At Tillamook Vision Center we are pleased to be able to provide the latest in Ocular Imaging to identify, diagnose, and monitor diseases of the eye. We offer routine screening photography as part of your comprehensive exam so that you can see and appreciate what the doctor is looking at when your eyes are being examined. We also provide a more detailed photographic evaluation when ocular disease is present. Digital photography can help us monitor medical conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes, and even identify neurological problems like impending strokes and brain tumors. Often changes in the health of your eyes might not affect your vision until they are advanced, and photography can help us detect and treat these conditions sooner.
Our clinic is also excited to now offer the latest in optical coherence tomography for the identification and monitoring of glaucoma, retinal disease, and disorders of the cornea and anterior segment. This camera gives us a high-definition cross-sectional view of the tissue in your eye, which can help us assess eye diseases and watch them over time for progression. Our doctor can also use these photos to discuss with you exactly what they’re watching for in your eyes at your exam.
Our clinic is able to fit and provide advanced contact lens services for medical conditions which require contact lens correction. These conditions include numerous disorders of the front of the eye which typically cannot be corrected with glasses, such as keratoconus and other ectasias which distort the normal shape of the eye’s optics.
Tillamook Vision Center is also able to fit and provide scleral lenses for the treatment of ocular surface diseases, where the surface of the eye requires help to remain healthy and maintain clear vision. These conditions can include corneal scarring, post-surgery, and severe dry eye.
We are also excited in the near future to begin offering ortho-keratology services. Similar to a retainer, these lenses are only worn at night while sleeping, and they re-shape the front of the eye to provide clear vision during the whole day without correction. Studies have also shown that they have a significant effect in slowing or stopping the development of near-sightedness in kids.
